Laboratory Services

Inpatients and registered outpatients receive quality laboratory services through our Department of Laboratory Services at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.

Our Laboratory consists of Core Lab (Hematology, Biochemistry, Transfusion Medicine), Microbiology, Histopathology/Cytology and Laboratory Specimen Procurement and Dispatch (Central Receiving/Phlebotomy).

Outpatient Blood Collection: Outpatients are processed in numerical order, although some patients will be processed on a priority basis due to special clinic requirements.

Specimen Drop Off: Patients dropping off specimens must register within the designated hours (Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM). Specimens must be labelled with the patient’s first and last name, date of birth as well as date and time of collection. Please do not drop off any specimen samples at any other locations within the hospital (e.g.: Emergency Department)

Additional Information:

Certain tests are not considered a benefit under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). These tests will be billed directly to the patient and may be covered by private insurers. Depending on the type of laboratory tests ordered, the tests will be tested on-site or referred to other specialty laboratories.  Referred out tests must have a fully completed requisition from the referral lab.
