Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Visiting Hours – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

  • Parents are allowed 24-hours access for the duration of their child’s stay.
  • Visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Two visitors may be present at the bedside at a time.
  • All visitors must be over the age of 12 with the exception of siblings of the newborn. An adult must supervise siblings at all times.
  • There may be times when visiting is limited or restricted.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the North Bay Regional Health Centre provides an Intensive Care Nursery setting for newborns as early as 30 weeks gestation.

Five Pediatricians and skilled nurses with specialty Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing education provide intensive nursing for the critically ill baby and supportive care for pre-term infants as they develop.

The health care team is supported by Respiratory Therapists, a lactation consultant, a Dietician, Social Workers, Pharmacists and Paediatric Rehabilitation Therapists. The family is an important component of the health care team.

The NICU is also a high-risk referral centre for areas surrounding North Bay. Close linkages with Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Ottawa), Sick Children’s Hospital (Toronto) and our own community service agencies compliment the full spectrum of neonatal care.
