Respiratory Therapy

The Respiratory Therapy department provides 24 hour service to patients with respiratory concerns.

Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) are health care professionals who monitor, evaluate and treat individuals in need of respiratory support. This includes mechanically ventilated patients in Critical Care, NICU and the Emergency department.

RRT’s are active members of the Code Blue, Code Pink and Rapid Assessment of Critical Events team (RACE). We are involved with all patient populations throughout the hospital.

Respiratory Therapy Assistants work within the Respiratory Therapy department. They provide oxygen equipment rounds on all inpatients, stocking and assembly of respiratory equipment and maintain the crash cart supply room.

The Pulmonary Function Lab performs in depth lung studies on both inpatients and outpatients. Staff provides education and support to patients with lung disease such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Any patient admitted to NBRHC has smoking cessation supports and quit medications made available to them by the Respiratory Therapy department. An RRT will visit to help with medications and advice to keep them comfortable while in hospital. We will also provide tools and support to anyone wishing to quit smoking.

The Breathing Clinic, located within the Cardiac Respiratory Testing office at NBRHC; offers diagnosis, treatment, and education for people with lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients are referred to the Clinic by their doctor or health care provider.
